The islands of S. Tome & Principe, with an area of 857 km2 and 139 km2, respectively, are located in the Guinea Gulf between the latitudes 1o41'26,18"N and 0o0'0,2"S and the longitudes 60 18'19"E and 7o27'42,12"E. The altitudes of S. Tome vary from the sea level up to 2024 meters and those of Principe from the sea level up to 948,5 meters. The main rocks of these two islands are basalts, phonolites, trachytes, andesites, tephrites and volcanic tuffs. There are also very smassl areas of sandstones and several sands andfluvial terraces. The climate of S. Tome ranges from super-humid in the South to arid in the Northeast and from megathermic (below 300 meters of altitude) through mesothermic (between 300 and 1500 meters) to microthermic (above 1500 meters). Theclimate of Principe varies from super-humid in the South to semi-arid in the North and it is megathermic (below 300 meters of altitude) or mesothermic (above 300 meters). The primary vegetation formations of the islands are the microthermic <> (tropical forest), the <>, the subalpine brushwoods, and the subdeserts. The primary-secondary formations include the mesothermic <>, the megathermic <>, and the coastal <>. The secondary formations are the <> and the prairies. The artificial formations include coconut trees, oil palm trees, cacao, coffee, and different arboreous associations. The soils map presented is of the detailed-reconnaissance type.
